Introduction
Food packaging could be referred to as a group of activities in product planning that involves designing and producing the container or wrapper for the product.
Reasons for Packaging
- Packaging protects the food on its route from the manufacturer to the final consumer.
- Packaging carries advertisement for as long as the used in its package
- It increases the cost of handling in terms of storage and transportation for both the intermediaries and the consumer
- Packaging helps to identify a product and this may prevent substitution of competitive goods
- Packaging also serve as a promotion at the point of purchase
- Family packaging : This involves the use of identical packaging for all products e.g rite food industry like the bigi apple, bigi cola, bigi lemon etc
- Re-use packaging : This involves using packaging that can serve other purposes after the original content have been consumed e.g wine bottle are been used for sales of groundnut.
- Multiple packaging : This involves putting several different units in one container .
- Refill packaging : Here the original package is maintained by the buyer of the product.
- Packaging have potentially serious hazards from glass splinters or fragments in food.
- Packaging causes environmental problems and pollution . However it satisfies consumers desire for convenience in the form of throw away container.
- Some packages have been condemned for being health hazardous e.g plastic containers in chemical industries.
- A packaging is expensive to make i.e in cosmetics and even in simple food packages.
- Higher weight incur higher transport cost than other types of packaging.
- Packaging prolongs the shelf life of food
- It makes food safer and less vulnerable to contamination
- Packaging accounts for a percentage of all food manufacturers cost and that is factored into the final price of each food product for the consumer
- Single serving packages and packaged perishable items are convenient because consumers don't have to wrap them up or put them in containers before storing them
- Packaging also makes food more marketable and makes the product more appealing to eyes.
