Nutrition is referred to as the science that deals with the study of foods in relation to their effects on the body. It is the study of nutrients or the science that interprets the nutrients and other substances in food in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of an organism.
The stages of nutrition of the body includes;
Ingestion - digestion - Absorption - Assimilation - Excretion.
Basic knowledge of Nutrition
Nutrition is the study of nutrients in relation to the other functions of the body. It also involves the study of chemical and physical properties, nutrients, their food sources, deficiency symptoms and their appropriate proportion in a balance diet.
The knowledge of nutrition is important for the following reasons;
1. To promote good intellectual development
2. For maintenance of good health
3. To know the kinds of food nutrients necessary to reduce the incidence of sickness
4. To know the kinds of food that will meet the dietary requirements when needed
5. To know how to plan ,prepare and serve balanced meals.
6. To acquire the knowledge of different methods of cooking.
Functions of Human Nutrition in the Body
1. It reduces the risks of some diseases e.g heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer etc
2. It helps to maintain a proper weight
3. It reduces high blood pressure
4. It lowers high cholesterol
5. It improves the well being of a person
6. It improves the ability to fight off illness
Factors that affect Food and Nutrition
There are some factors that affects the effectiveness of food and nutrition in the body. They include;
1. Basal Metabolic rate
2. Weight
3. Sex
4. Climate and environment
5. Age
6. Lifestyle and food habits
7. Cooking practices
8. Physiological state
9. Cultural Factors
10. Food Fads.
