Topic: METHODS OF COOKING I 

     Food may be cooked in many ways. There are two types of heating methods in cooking; wet method which includes boiling, stewing, frying and steaming) and dry methods baking, roasting and grilling). The common methods includes;

  • Boiling 
  • Stewing
  • Steaming
  • Baking
  • Frying
  • Sauteing
  • Grilling
  • Poaching
  • Braising 
1. Steaming : this is a moist method of cooking by steam from boiling liquid(water). The food may or may not come in direct contact with the liquid while the food is being cooked. Steaming can also be carried out in high pressure by means of a pressure cooker or when it is combined with dry heat in the oven. 

                    Foods Suitable For Steaming 

i. Small pieces of meat e.g cutlets,chops 

ii. Fresh and dried fruits 

iii. Small fish or fillet e.g cod steaks 

iv. Puddings, suet pastry,batter mixtures ,egg custards 

v. Root vegetables and potatoes but not green vegetables.
