 Topic: Decision Making

Decision making the act of selecting or deciding from two or more alternatives. It is the act of making a choice or making up one's mind from a particular action. When faced with one cause of action, there will be no decision making.

                   Steps In Decision Making

There are different steps involved in decision making. They include

I. Identify the decision to be made:

This involves noticing that there is a problem and then defining the situation or problem that requires a decision. For example your problem could be buying a new pair of shoes and making a choice that fits. To do this you have to consider

a. The purpose of the shoe

b. Your budget

c. The type of shoe and colour

II. List the alternatives :

Alternatives are options available to you or different ways of getting things done.

III. Choose the best alternatives :

After critical thinking and weighing the advantages and disadvantages involved in the alternatives, the individual decides finally on the alternative decision to take. When he or she finally makes up his or her mind to settle for the action,he or she should bear whatever comes out of it. This means that the decision taken may be good or bad.

IV. Act on your decision :

Carryout your decision to the best of your ability. This means posing to buy the shoe.

V. Evaluate your decision: A good decision making does not end when the decision is made. The feedback or the results of the decision made should be well examined to know if it serves the purpose for which it is made . If not, one should not be discouraged because you may have to make another decision .

IV. Act on your decision

V. Evaluate your decision.

                Factors that Influence Decision Making

The decisions we make are usually influenced by many factors. They include

I. Family: family members influence your decision by helping in one way or the other.

2. Friends: friends can influence your decision e.g wanting a shoe for your friend.

3. Resources: what you have available can influence your decision.

4. Values: The decision you make are always based on what is considered important e.g watching a movie or studying your books at night.

5. Needs and Wants: In decision making, needs may be considered before wants.
