Topic: Household Linen 

    Household linen is referred to as articles used in the home to enhance beauty and serve other purposes in the home. These articles are used depending on the effect and reasons for which they are chosen. They include bathroom linen, table clothes and bed linen. 

                 Types of Household Linen 

       There are various types of household linen used in the home. They include 

a. Bathroom Linen: These are materials specifically for bathroom. Examples include 

I. Bath towels; used for wiping and drying the body. 

II. Face towel; used for wiping the face during bath or when sweating. 

III. Shower curtain; prevents water from flowing to the other areas of the bathroom. 

b. Table clothes/Linen ; these are articles used on the table. They include the following 

I. Table clothes: these are made of all kinds of materials. They should be washable as they are always likely to have spills on them. 

II. Place mats: they are used on the table as cover  for protection of heat from plates and for decoration of tables. They can be embroider or decorated with lace . 

III. Table Napkins: they are used during meals for wiping hands, mouth ,covering and protecting dress from stains 

IV. Tea clothes: Tea clothes are used for wiping or cleaning tables, covering tea trays or baskets to prevent spills or dust from setting on it. 

V. Tray or Trolley linen: it is used for laying on the tray before placing the dishes to protect against flies and dust etc.

C. Kitchen linen: these are used in the kitchen for different purposes. They are essential and should be kept neat and clean always. Examples include; 

I. Hand towels; it is used for wiping and drying hands.

II. Oven gloves are used for taking hot pans from the oven. 

III. Dish clothes: it is used for wiping spills on kitchen surfaces.

d. Bed Linen: they are fabrics used for making beds. They are 

I. Mattress cover; these are made of hard wearing used for covering the mattress to protect it from dust and dirt.

II. Bedsheets and Pillow cases; They are usually made of cotton materials which are easy to wash. These sheets on a bed must be larger than the required size of the bed. 

III. Bed spread/ Bed cover; it is used to cover the bed when not in use. They look attractive and helps to keep bed clean.

IV. Pillow cases: it is used for covering the pillows. 

V. Blankets: They are made of woollen fabrics. They can also be used to cover the body during cold season.

e. Curtain and Draperies: they are used for protection and privacy in the room. They can be used to keep the windows and doors against the rays of light on sun. Curtains can be made of strong fabrics ,light or heavy texture. In many homes ,two sets of curtains are used.

I. A lighter pair that is transparent 

II. A heavier pair to be drawn across the window night.
