Topic: ADOLESCENCE 

        Adolescence is referred to as the stage between childhood and adulthood which is a period of growing up. An adolescent is neither a child nor an adult. It is a period of time when a person matures and moves from childhood to adulthood. Adolescents have some special needs and some problems which affects his or her relationships with his or her parents and other people around him or her. 

   The stages of adolescence can be sub - divide into two groups. They include; 

a. Early Adolescence: This stage is the early stage of adolescence which begins from 12years and stops at 15years.

b. Late Adolescence: This period start from  16years and stops at 21years.

                 Characteristics of Adolescence 

      The characteristics of adolescence will be discussed under the following sub - hearings. 

a. Social Characteristics 

  • They tend to adhere and abide more to their peer group values. 
  • They often tend to disobey their parents and people in authority.  

b. Intellectual Characteristics 

  • They have the ability to analyse
  • They are curious in nature 
C. Physical characteristics 

  • Adolescents have glutinous appetite 
  • Their growth is always irregular, often with growth spurts. 
d. Physiological characteristics 

  • Adolescents have irregular behaviour
  • They often like to be identified and accepted by peers 
  • They are very sensitive to criticism 
e. Moral and ethical characteristics 

  • Adolescents are often inquisitive about life and its meaning.
  • They are always guided by their own ideas. 
                       Challenges of Adolescents 

  1. Adjustment: Adolescents have problems adjusting to their physical environmental changes. They are often uncomfortable, clumsy and anxious especially during menstruation for the girls, when their breast is enlarged and for the boys,when they have to cope with changed voice and bigger sex organ(penis).
  2. Peer pressure: they often want to go along with their peers. There could be negative influence from peer group. 
  3. Independence : They often want to do things on their own. They do not like to be directed or guided by parents or other adults. 
  4. Need for achievement: Adolescents often want to be successful or excel in everything they do. When they fail, they become unhappy. 
  5. Status: they often want to act or behave like adults but they are not fully adults yet. They may start exhibiting behaviours like adults for example girls putting on make up and boys smoking.
