Family clothing refers to garments, dresses or articles we place on the body to prevent exposure, beautify or adorn it.

Care and maintenance of family clothing is a process of keeping clothing clean and in a good condition in order for clothes to be durable and last long. This includes repairs,washing,ironing and storing away. Clothing is an article placed on our body for protection, beautification and adornment.

Care of family clothing is necessary because they can promote or impair the health of family members. These clothing should be well cared for by washing them regularly to prevent diseases. Clothing articles includes dresses, shoes, jeweleries, hats etc.

Reasons For the Care of Family Clothing

Clothing is very necessary for human beings and they require good management for the following reasons

1. It makes the material last longer

2. Regular washing and good maintenance of clothing in the wardrobe keeps materials fresh

3. Mending of clothes help to save money for the owner as the repaired clothes could still be worn instead of being thrown away

4. Good health and good appearance are maintained by wearing clean and well-kept clothes

5. Good clothing maintenance adds to personal pride

Methods of Storing Family Clothing

Family clothes can be stored properly in any of the following ways;

1. Storage in boxes or bags: this method protects clothes from insects, dust, light and air that is either too humid or too dirty.

2. Storage in closets or wardrobes with hangers: clothes hanged in the closet or wardrobes are prevented from getting creased or rumpled. In this way, they retain their original form or shape.

3. Storage in drawers and shelves : generally, certain clothes are best stored in the drawers e.g heavy woollen sweaters, stockings and sometimes quilts.

4. Storage of shoes: shoes should not be left carelessly on the floor to gather dust and become more difficult to clean.

5. Storage of jewelry: These items e.g earrings, and necklaces are expensive and sometimes fragile. They should be handled with care. They can be stored in a small padded box with good cover or any good secure or durable container.

Points to Consider When Selecting Clothing

a. Iron and air clothes before storage in boxes, bags, cartons, shelves etc

b. Ensure that the wardrobe ,carton etc are kept very clean.

C. Do not store dirty clothes to prevent mold, germs and diseases.

d. Remove all detachable fitting like brouches and pins before storage.

e. Do not store damp clothes to prevent growth of mold and mildew that can damage our clothings
