Topic: Cultural Food Habits
Food habit is the attitude and reactions of individuals towards food on a regular basis. It is based on the social , emotional and cultural factors in a given community. Food habit could be either good or bad and once they are established, they are not easy to change
Factors that Influence Food Habits
1. Health of the individual.
2. Educational level.
3. Psychological variation
4. Religious beliefs
5. Emotional feelings
6. Economic status
7. Family upbringing
8. Weather condition
9. Social interactions
10. Customs and taboos
Food taboos, Fads and Fallacies
These are factors that also have an effect of food habits. They tend to boost social status within the society.
I. Food Taboos: These are foods which are forbidden because of religious or cultural beliefs. This prevents an individual from eating a balanced diet. It especially affects pregnant women and prevents them from eating nutritionally valuable foods.
II. Food Faddism: these are practices about food engaged in by people for a relatively short period. It leads to addiction to certain foods which could be detrimental to the health of an individual.
III. Food Fallacies: these are wrong opinions about the role of certain food nutrients in the body. However this contributes to high rate of malnutrition especially among women.
